Freedom Force Backup Tutorial

A tutorial by Olgerth "The Unbeatable Silencer" Heidern

Olgerth "The Silencer" Heidern here again. This is a copy and paste of my own set of backup procedures for Freedom Force. This checklist saved me from quite a bit of frustration, and I think it could be of some use to other aspiring modders.

  1. Create a backup folder elsewhere on your hard drive.
  2. All pertinent data that you're interested in backing up is in the Data folder (if you've been modifying the original FF) and/or in the mod folder you created (if you're making a separate, distributable mod).
  3. If you're making a separate mod, make it a rule to back up the ENTIRE MOD FOLDER before you introduce any huge changes to it.
  4. If you're modifying the original FF:
    • back up characters.dat to save any new characters you introduced.
    • back up powers.dat to save any new powers you made.
    • back up the entire "speech" folder to preserve any new descriptions, strings AND custom voice packs installed so far.
    • back up campdef.dat to save any modifications you made to single-player campaign.
    • back up the appropriate mission folders within "missions" folder.
    • back up fx.dat to rescue your custom effects definitions.
  5. Finally, remember: when you catch yourself thinking "I should back up before I make this next modification", stop whatever you're doing, and do the backup. You'll thank yourself later.
