Thread for pondering the future of TribesI remember reading the manual for Starsiege: Tribes over and over, taking in the sweet sweet lore that spanned massive empires over thousands of years. I remember getting so into the story, only to find out that the factions didn't really mean anything in the actual game and no one even played vanilla anymore by the time I picked it up. Tribes 2 was just about to come out. That game was different. Tribes 2 was ahead of its time. There was a sublime feeling that accompanied the sight of a friend's mortar round landing on the green target I had marked. Flag runs in Tribes 2 were beyond epic. One of the few games that really made you feel like a soldier in a massive war on a far-off planet. I only had a chance to play the beta of Tribes: Vengeance, and it was tons of fun, but felt more like unreal tournament than anything else. Not a bad thing in itself, but the charm of Tribes for me were the non-combat roles, the sense of strategy with maps and beacons and combined arms assaults. Tribes seems to be totally dead now, alas. Regardless, I'm tantalized by the idea of a Tribes game that would run with the lore and combine the best of games like Tribes 2, Modern Warfare 2, Planetside, and the upcoming M.A.G. for PS3. |

I remember playing the demo I found on a PC World disc back in November 2005 and I thought it was the coolest game back then. Problem is, I don't think a lot of people even remember Tribes after all these years. |

Tribes dominated a good portion of my high school years. I probably have more memories with this game than any other. As for the future of Tribes, I honestly don't think there is one. |

I still play TV. Much love for it, and the people who still play as well. If a patch, or something doesn't happen for it, I think at least a game like it, with better support and financing on advertising, would be a great idea. |

I had a blast w/ Tribes: V's SP component. Who owns the Tribes IP? I don't think Irrational owns it. Who bought it from Sierra? |

Activision absorbed Sierra. Though they'll probably just sell it eventually, considering they don't seem to have any interesting in using it. |

It is certainly surprising that no Tribes games have come out in awhile, like mentioned above I am sure Activision will just end up selling off the rights to someone who wants to use them. |

As for pondering--wasn't there an interview where the guys said this was a game they agreed to make just to pay the bills? I think if there's a future for Tribes, it's probably not here at Irrational. |

Who, Irrational? I doubt that. They were hired to make a Tribes game with a narrative, which they accomplished, however they have admitted that Tribes: Vengeance was probably their worst game because they just didn't understand the franchise or share the passion of its fanbase. Basically, this was a nice way of saying that Tribes isn't about goddamn story, but we were paid to do a job and we did it. |

While I did like that Tribes: V has a good SP component and I did think they were successful at making a sweet SP component for a Tribes game... ...the future of a Tribes MP probably belongs w/ a company that can make awesome MP games and/or maybe even back with GarageGames. EDIT: |

Knowing Activision-Blizzard they are going to some how make a new tribes and possibly kill the FPS genre the way they killed MMOs. |
