Sounds interesting, can't wait to see more. I wonder why all the rumours pointed to Irrational working on it. |

Woah. Thanks for posting. I was really hoping Irrational was working on this. I'm sad, but also excited for what IG is working on. GAWD I hope they announce something at E3. The suspense is killing me. |

At first I was annoyed that the game would not be made for PS3 (at least initially--I'm sure we'll get a port a year later...) but the more I think about it, the less excited I am about the announcement. Why on earth is a tactical game series being remade into a FPS?? I just don't get it. However, I know Marin has the ability to tell a good story, so I am sure that it will be better than what it appears to be on the surface: yet another FPS where the faceless protagonist fights a barrage of hostile aliens and saves the world. Oh, and Irrational is working on an original IP. http://kotaku.com/5515894/bioshock-creator-working-on-an-original-title |

I think they are making it a FPS cause thats what sells, and profit is all that matters. I can't believe they leave out the PS3 owners. I was hoping they would stay true to their roots with RTS and turned based strategy. There are too many FPS, FPS sequels, and FPS crap out there now...and on the horizon. I have completely lost interest in anything X-com. *pipe dreaming* Please devs...someone...anyone...create a game with the motives of an actual gamer, not an accountant. Be creative, come up with a new concept. And make it available for everyone. |

Well I have to admit that I was not familiar with X-Com as a player, though I have obviously heard of it as it continues to top lists of "favorite" or "best" video games. I think that 2K is taking it in a very new direction, the time period is the 1950's and it is an FPS. Making BioShock comparisons becomes inevitable; the time period is similar, the buzz campaign approached people that had participated in the Something in the Sea campaign.... I wonder how hard they will push to distance themselves from that franchise. In any case, I can't wait to hear more about the game. EDIT:
I am not sure that I agree with this statement though. The FPS aspect of BioShock 2 was there, but I did not feel that there was any suspense to the story. I believe that this is largley due to their marketing strategy so perhaps this time around more of the plot will be left for the gamer to find. An interesting quote though... |

at this point, just about any title deemed 'console exclusive' is most likely a timed exclusive (except 1st-party titles of course) this one will probably make it to the PS3 just as B1 did. on a related note... I'm really hoping that Project Icarus isn't exclusive as I own the system that usually has to wait it out. |

Technically it is not 2k Marin, it is 2k Australia.. FYI *edit* |

Well that is certainly interesting. Could this mean that one half of 2k Marin will be working on another Bioshock and the Australia sector will be focused on XCOM? only time will tell I suppose. |

Did anyone see the recent 20 min commented demo? it's looking better than I expected with both the 60s atmosphere and gameplay. It's quite long but is worth listening and watching, enjoy: http://kotaku.com/5834606/is-the-new-xcom-a-shooter-judge-for-yourself All I got to say is that it looks promising even if the stuff is far from the original. I'm looking forward to it. |

Yeah, I enjoyed the video, too. The first minute or so, with the silent film strip, was actually quite gripping. I felt myself tensing up, waiting for the inevitable tragedy to strike. I was a teen when UFO Defense came out, and it was easily my favorite game for years. I sunk lots and lots of hours into it. But nobody, not even the original creators have been able to capture that lightnining in a bottle again, much less improve upon it. After 4 or 5 fair to mediocre sequels on various platforms, I'm willing to keep an open mind for the reboot. The last planned game in the series, "X-COM: Alliance", was also supposed to be a FPS, way back in 1999. So this direction is no big surprise. I'm just glad to see a studio revive what was essentially a dead IP (no new games for over 10 years, despite a loyal fan base). Oh, and XCOM had a sick booth at PAX Prime, even though it went by another name: Citizen Skywatch. Lots of people got in line for it, without knowing anything about it. And lots of them raved about how cool it was afterwards. They even threw a party for the fans at a local bar. Great eats, free drinks, signed mini-posters, and an alien-blasted corpse that looked badass (it was right next to the buffet table--ewwww). |

I wasn't expecting the tragedy, so it was more shocking for me. I will buy this when it's released, I love FPS, specially when they're so open, and I am loving absolutely everything they're showing so far. Hell, I am more excited for this than for Mass Effect 3 (honestly). By the way, it's great to see an old time fan so open to this new game, kudos to you, japester. |

I'm on the fence about this one. It seems to have the same ambiance as a Bioshock game with some interesting mechanics. The shooting looks lame though and I really prefered the original black blob aliens from the announce trailer to these lego blocks. But I may give it a chance when it drops. |

It seems they're one and the same, only that we see their complete materialized form in the recent demo. Still that scene in the kitchen could be kept as a prologue mission introducing us to those shapeshifting aliens? |

It's very good to hear from Jordan Thomas again. I think he has some great ideas about gameplay and storytelling. People didn't seem to appreciate his role as creative director on Bioshock 2, but I thought he did a good job. While the game was of course inferior to Bioshock, it was very fan-focused and centered itself upon the history of Rapture and the people who inhabit that world. Subject Delta's story was a great one to piece together. XCOM has come a long way judging by this E3 demo. I'm glad someone shared that because I didn't hear one word about it in the press. I'm excited to play this game now. |

Agreed with samitas?.. I wasn't an XCOM fan for the story telling... It was set in the sixties and you had a team of alien fighters...that was it.. The game was all about strategies, taking out aliens.. I want more of that (or come with Freedom Force 2 please) |

Just out of curiosity, are you both referring to the first game (UFO Defense/Enemy Unknown) only? Because there were 4 (or more) strategy sequels produced after that one. I ask because a lot of people only seem to remember the first one. |

I Played the first one and maybe the second ( and, was there an underwater element, or am I making that up?) |

No, you're remembering correctly. Considering that the first game is hailed as one of the best strategy titles of all time, and neither the original developer nor any of the subsequent license holders could ever match that effort (after many attempts), it makes quite a bit of sense that 2K might go a different route and stick with what they know. |

Just got around to watching this this weekend. I have to say, it looks pretty cool, and I enjoy the idea that your squad members can permanently die / be lost and should be selected based on different abilities. I also like the cover system, but it seemed to be a fairly linear FPS even in an open environment with generally the same kind of enemy (perhaps a sympton of an early level?). Definitely worth playing to me, the only question is whether or not I will buy it new or used. If they dazzle me a bit more, especially with some strategic elements I'll probably get it new. |

Yup I agree they need to diversify the ennemies we're bound to encounter, not just the same skin or poygon with a different colour ^^ |
