What Do You Think The Next Irrational Project Is?

They'll hopefully tell us soon, but I still believe we have time to try and have some fun guessing what Irrational is currently working on. Some rumours I've heard around the net have been a new X-COM game, SWAT 5, System Shock 3, a new Freedom Force or something completely new.

System Shock 3 would be sweet, but I think EA owns the rights still, so that makes that unlikely.

Freedom Force and SWAT 5 would both be cool, though I haven't heard a huge amount in or again favour of either of these two.

X-COM seems more likely since 2K has bought the rights to the series I believe, though from what Wikipedia and other sources says, the game will be an FPS and will use the Unreal 3 engine.

So, what do you all think? =)

I'm thinking a brand new title series that represents the
throwback to days of old. Possibly steampunk as they haven't
explored that yet

BioShock was kind of reminiscent Steampunk in a way... I wouldn't call it Steampunk Steampunk, but it was in that general area of overall style... At least it seemed so to me. I wouldn't have a clue what the technical definition for Steampunk actually is.

I don't think a new chapter/part of an allready existing game, but something entire new.

A new IP would be interesting. Something that will revolutionize FPS, like BioShock did.

I'd also like to see re-releases of older Irrational titles on PSN/XBLA, but that may be tricky due to other publishers owning the rights to said games.

X-Com is the only thing that I've been hearing on the rumor mill. Hopefully it's a reboot of some sort.

I personally view Bioshock as a biopunk title as said on the 2K forums
and that a steampunk game would be more like Steamboy
or Girl Genius

of course all the rumors say X-Com, and with their history of both FPS and strategy games it would be very interesting to see what they come up with...but to recapture the magic of X-Com, no matter the type of game it is will be very challenging, and if it ends up being a hybrid RTS/Squad Based FPS even more so, since I can not think of one game that has successfully achieved combining the two - it also scares me that it will probably have to be console and PC, since I would scarred about interface compromises made to make the strategy component work on the console

and I don't know if this is heresy to post on an Irrational games forum, but Bioshock (good that it was) certainly didn't revolutionize FPS's in any way, IMHO

I wouldn't call it heresy. In fact I'd say more than anything, BioShock was the game which took the tools that previous titles (Deus Ex, System Shock 2 etc...) introduced to use them to a greater amount of their potential.

Most of the ideas in BioShock had been done before really, but it wasn't the fact the ideas were there, it was how they were used. The way the little RPG elements and level design made it feel like you were exploring the world, rather than being shown the way to go all the time. So the title probably wasn't revolutionary in that it created the idea, but it could be in it's influence on the industry and how people think about using those elements which made Deus Ex, System Shock 2 great and innovative.

I wouldn't say that I'd be disappointed by an addition to any of the current franchises, but it seems to me that Ken Levine is nothing if not a man willing to take some creative risks. 2K as an entity is already working on existing franchises and from a balanced portfolio standpoint I think they need to be taking some higher risk steps. I put my money on "new franchise."

Since Irrational got back its name, it would be great if they could also have got back the rights to System Shock. The thought of a System Shock 3 has me drooling already...

I've got it on good authority that their next project is Freedom Force Halloween costumes. The market's wide open and everyone wants to look like Mentor this year.

although i dont class it as steampunk, many people do agree with you. i actually find steampunk in general as unappealing so whatever line bioshock manages to walk in between steampunk and not steampunk is a good one.

Of course I would love to see a System Shock 3! I think Ken said that Bioshock was a sort of spiritual sequel so that may be as close as we get. Honestly I would love to see something new! as long as it doesn't get de-klined

I hope it's something entirely new and exciting! There really needs to be more diverse games in the market and I think Irrational has shown that they're willing to shake the cage a bit. I have full faith that they'll continue to with whatever project they put out next, entirely new or not.

Is it true that Thief II is meant to be steampunk? I am ignorant of these sorts of classifications.

Closest thing I know to Steampunk was that really annoying show I watched once about that warehouse.

The rumors have heavily pointed to an X-Com title. However, I have a feeling it will be something new. Whatever it is, am sure it will be awesome and I just hope the announcement comes sooner rather than later.

Will they get around to do that RPG/Shooter that was in their blood since System Shock 2? I'm sure Irrational loved doing Bioshock, but they did turn it into a full shooter so that they'd get a bigger audience, and don't confuse potential buyers.

So I wonder if many at Irrational aren't itching to do another RPG/FPS hybrid again.

Plus, X-COM.

Hell, I'll pick up anything from them, really.
